brief history of WKA Kickboxing in Nigeria

Kickboxing is relatively a new sport in Nigeria. The Federation is the youngest Federation just incorporated into the sporting calendar in Nigeria by the National Sports Commission (NSC).The sport is a martial art that derived its existence from full contact karate. In Nigeria, the sport got its recognition when it was included as the sport to be competed for by Team Nigeria in the 9th All Africa Games (AAG) in Algiers, Algeria in 2007. In Algiers, the sport won 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals with 6 athletes in its first major International outing like the AAG; Candidly, the performance was worthy of commendation. Immediately after the Games, another kickboxing team comprising of 6 athletes, ( 4 male and 2 female) and 2 officials departed the shores of this country to fly the flag of Nigeria at the World Kickboxing Championships in Germany. Of course, they came back as heroes and heroines; they won 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals. It may interest you to know that one of the vice President of the Federation, Dr.Mykel Eneduwa single handedly sponsored the trip. Since then the sport has never looked back in its resolve to place Nigeria in the sports map and also to be the leading martial arts and combat sports in Nigeria.

The first tournament with similar kickboxing rules was introduced in Nigeria in 1985 by HAPPY JOHN UVWIEFERIGWERE through a body known as Kandoshin Union ’. He was the first pioneer instructor of the Sport, later former Nigerian Taekwondo Olympian Emmnuel Peters Oghenejobo joined him to form the first Kickboxing association in Nigeria, since then there has been pockets of people laying claims to its origin in Nigeria.

Dr. Mykel Eneduwa , pioneered the introduction of the WKA in Nigeria and a few African Countries, and has organised several seminars for Athletes and officials to promote the sport in Nigeria, he has also organised several Championships in Nigeria.
